Pediatric Dentistry Q&A | Miller Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics

Do you have questions about your child’s pediatric dental treatment? No worries, here at Miller Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics our goal is to make sure that both you and your child understand every aspect of treatment here in our Boynton Beach dental office. Continue reading for an in-depth Q&A.

Q: What is the difference between a general dentist and a pediatric dentist?

A: General dentists administer treatment for people of all ages, while pediatric dentists specialize in the dentistry for children. After attending dental school, pediatric dentists complete an additional two to three years of training focusing on child psychology and development. This equips them with the knowledge and skills they need for specializing in pediatric dental treatment.

Q: When should I schedule my child’s first dental appointment?

A: We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental appointment by their first birthday, or whenever their first tooth starts to erupt.

Q: When should I begin brushing my infant’s teeth at home?

A: You can begin brushing your child’s teeth whenever their first tooth erupts. Choose a children’s toothpaste that contains fluoride and make sure to brush them gently but thoroughly twice each day.

Q: Are X-Rays safe for my child?

A: Absolutely. Using proper safety precautions such as the use of lead aprons, dental x-rays are incredibly safe. In fact, you receive no more radiation having a full set of x-rays taken than you would going on a flight from the east coast to the west coast. We take all possible precautions to keep your little one safe and healthy at all times, especially when taking x-rays.

Q: How often should my child return for their pediatric dental appointments?

A: We’d like to see your child in our chair for their routine check-up and cleaning every six months. This allows Dr. Miller and his team to monitor their dental health and ensure that their teeth are developing correctly.

Q: What kinds of foods promote a healthy smile for my child?

A: A diet with lots of fruits and veggies high in nutrients and vitamins will help support healthy and happy teeth. Bananas, apples, oranges, carrots, and celery are all examples of yummy snacks that will help promote a healthy smile. Dairy products rich in calcium are also a key part of the development of strong, healthy teeth.

Q: How do I know if my child will need braces?

A: We recommend scheduling your child for an orthodontic check up around the age of seven. It is during this time that it can be determined, based upon the development of the teeth, if your child will need braces. Dr. Miller specializes in both general dentistry as well as pediatric dentistry, so your child will not have to go outside our Boynton Beach office for their orthodontic evaluation.

Q: When will my child’s braces be put on?

A: The age that your child’s braces are put on depends on the development of their teeth. Most children receive their braces between the ages of nine and fourteen.
